Hiko > Why is there this aversion to doing sexy roles? I read in one of your interviews that you really do not want to be portrayed as an object of desire, on the film screen?
Lara Dutta > Well, that's because of me. I have been from the modelling industry and being portrayed as a glamorous character on screen is no challenge for me at all. I have been doing it for the last ten years. And also, just the person I am. Actually, I am much more conservative in my thinking. And I enjoy playing indianised characters on screen.
Salvia > So Lara, how do you spend your time when there's no work?
Lara Dutta > I watch movies, go on treks, go fishing – fish, not men! And I just unwind and catch up with family.
Radhika > Hi Lara! Just want to tell you that I LOVED your performance in (film) No Entry ! When are you coming to the States for stage shows?
Lara Dutta > I should be in the States, sometime next year in April-May. I will be there with Akshay Kumar and Saif. Thank you for the compliment.
Bimbet > Sushmita and you come across as highly intelligent. Does that put guys in awe of you? Is it better to be perceived as a little dumb in your field, which is full of glamour and glitz?
Lara Dutta > Sometimes it pays to be dumb but yes, most of the time intelligence does intimidate a lot of people.
Radhika > Are the rumours about you and Derek Jeter true?
Lara Dutta > Let bygones be bygones. And no, the rumours are not true.
Radhika > What kind of social work do you engage in? I know you are busy as an actress but I'm sure that your stint as Miss Universe 2000 has made an indelible impression on your mind.
Lara Dutta > Apart from being an actress, I am also an Ambassadors to the United Nations Population Funds and I work on a lot theme issues ranging from HIV AIDS to female infanticide to dowry death and gender equality.
Radhika > You are one of the best dressed women in the industry! How do you come up with such a unique style? Also, is Ek Ajnabee your next film? I can't wait to see you again with Abhi (Abhishek Bachchan). I adore him (in case you didn't know I AM THE FUTURE MRS. BACHCHAN)!
Lara Dutta > It's glad to chat with you Mrs Bachchan! I think Abhikshek is adorable as well. But he is a brat. I am doing a guest appearance shot with both the Bachchans in Ek Ajanabee and I am really excited to be working with Mr (Amitabh) Bachchan senior for the first time. Thanks for the compliment.
Morcha > What's the secret of Kelly and you being together for so long, especially in fields like fashion and entertainment, where couples either drift apart or get into scandalous relationships with other partners, besides their own? How do the two of you have managed to keep your relationship intact?
Lara Dutta > Between Kelly and me there is lot of honesty and we have been together for seven years, and grown along with are own relationship. But it also helps that we are so busy most of the time that we don't get a chance to pick on the small little issues, which really, at the end of the day, don't matter.
Sadzaf > What is the most important transition you have experienced as an Indian woman on the international stage, after you won the Miss Universe title in 2000?
Lara Dutta > I was really surprised while living in America that Americans were clueless about the Indian culture and woman in particular, and it was an amazing triumph for me to go out there and change the perspective that they had about Indian women.
Sadzaf > Which role do you feel more comfortable in - emotional, romantic or comedy?
Lara Dutta > I love comedy. It's just that the energy is much on a higher level.
Wajeeha > AdaaB! How are you? Who's your favourite actor & actress in Indian cinema?
Lara Dutta > Adaab! My favourite actor was the late Sanjeev Kumar and now it is the legend Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. Actress -I love Kajol.
Sangeeta > Hi Lara, I am Sangeeta from California. What do you feel is the best achievement in life for you?
Lara Dutta > My biggest achievement in life so far has not yet been achieved.
Rahul12 > Do you like the roles like Malika Sherawat's in (the movie) Murder?
Lara Dutta > Hats off to Mallika to be able to carry something like that off. Indian cinema has come a long way and I am glad there are women around who can take it to another level.
Kali > Lara, is it true that you regret having done films like Andaz and Insan. Why?
Lara Dutta > I couldn't have asked for a better debut than Andaz . So, no regrets there. And I don't regret doing Insan but I wont be doing any films like that in the future since my priorities are different now.
Radhika > Which is your favorite Book?
Lara Dutta > My favourite book is Gone With The Wind .
Rahul12 > Would you do roles like Malika Sherawat, if offered? (They are mostly skin flicks).
Lara Dutta > I have my reservations on how much skin I am willing to show. I have never worn a swimsuit or even a pair of shorts in my films. And even in real life, I am much more conservative in my dressing.
Wajeeha > Lara ji. What is the one motto in life that you live by and would like to pass on to others?
Lara Dutta > Don't fret the small things in life. Always look at the bigger picture. Nothing in the world is more important than family.
Sangeeta > Which actor do you prefer to act with?
Lara Dutta > Very tough question. Out of the actors I have worked with so far, they are all really nice. I share a great rapport and I am very comfortable with Akshay, Abhishek and Bobby.
Joshdawson > Hey, I am Josh from Bangalore and I wanna know who is your favourite Hollywood actor and actress?
Lara Dutta > Hi Josh. My favourite actor - Robert De Niro. Actress - Michelle Pfeiffer.
Keki > Are you doing any films in a non glamorous role? Which ones? Wouldn't it affect your image of a modern, hot femme fatal?
Lara Dutta > I am doing a film called Amarjeet , the story of a young Punjabi girl from Patiala. It's a very hard-hitting performance oriented role. I don't think one odd film will do much damage.
Jigs > These days, even heroines in the main lead in Hindi films are reduced to the status of item girls. Your comments.
Lara Dutta > At times, sadly, even a leading heroine is limited to a couple of songs and very few scenes in a film. But there is always a silver lining and sometimes you do get roles of a lifetime.
Sadzaf > What is your ultimate goal in life? Did you always want to be an actress?
Lara Dutta > Yes, I always wanted to be an actress. And I think my ultimate goal in life is to walk away from my career and look back and say - A wonderful body of work, that is my contribution to the magic of celluloid cinema.
Sangeeta > Hi Lara, you say that you haven't worn a swimsuit. Did you not wear one in the Miss Universe Contest?
Lara Dutta > Yes of course. But I am talking about on screen; I have never worn a swim suit.
Wajeeha > I wish to ask you --- how have you evolved as an actress and a human since entering Bollywood?
Lara Dutta > I am at a much happier and more positive state in my career right now. I finally know exactly the kind of cinema I'd like to be part of. And, as a person, I think I am very fortunate and thankful to be able to live numerous lifetimes in the span of one, through every character that I portray on screen. That gives me a world of experience and treasure full of memories.
